Windows: “Portraits From the Museum Collection” Preview

The Museum’s collection includes a variety of portraits, most of which depict people of Wichita and Sedgwick County. They are created for many reasons: from sentimental to celebratory, for public or private viewing, as memorials, and as icons. Until the 1840s introduction of photography, portraits were rendered by hand in both two and three-dimensional mediums such as painting and sculpture. Portraits depict specific people and offer a glimpse into their world. They also provide clues about personal identity, social status, cultural values, and artistic trends.

Come see this preview of our 3rd-floor exhibit, Portraits From the Museum Collection.

This exhibit is part of the Museum’s “Windows on Collections” – A frequently changing exhibit of artifacts from the Museum’s growing collection. Depending upon any given theme, this exhibit ranges from the topical to the bizarre.
